During Buck-O-Nine's years of constant touring, I always had a beat up acoustic handy and I spent time working on a bunch of new songs. Before long there were many new songs born from writing on the road in the back of a tour bus, in hotel rooms and at home during some much needed down time from touring. Some of the tunes were used for Buck-O-Nine recordings, but many others were left without a home. In the spring of 2000, I began playing a few of these tunes live in a band I formed with three other members of Buck-O-Nine called the Winos. The Winos consisted of myself on guitar, Jon on Vox, Andy on bass and Jeff on Drums. We were going for a much different sound than of Buck-O-Nine. The Winos sound was dominated by a bluesy open tuned slide guitar and upbeat rhythms combined with more melodic sounds. Several future Destrung songs were first played in the Winos set. The Winos disbanded after about a year. At this point, I decided to start recording these songs I had been working on over the years at Earthling Studios in Santee. After recording intermittently for over a year with Mike Kamoo, a new album was finally finished. I decided that this Jonas Kleiner "solo project" should be called Destrung. In May 2003, I began playing Destrung songs with an actual band consisting of Rob Paterson from Crown Down on bass and Jeff from Buck-O-Nine on drums. Jeff eventually left Destrung and lucky for us, Eric from the band Surf Report joined in May 2004. In May 2004, I was finally able to release the CD "People Watching." Destrung has been happily jamming, working on new material and playing shows mostly in the San Diego area.
